Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

... was written in 1994. It was based on a true story, and is variously described as a novel, a non–fiction book, and an example of the 'faction' genre. It was a New York Times best seller, and one of the finalists for the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for non–fiction. In 1997 it was made into a film, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Kevin Spacey and John Cusack.

The book is described on Wikipedia as "atmospherically Deep South coastal and Southern Gothic in tone, depicting a wide range of eccentric personalities in and around the city of Savannah, Georgia". It tells the story of the murder of a male prostitute named Danny Hansford, which took place in Mercer House, the residence of the respected antiques dealer Jim Williams, in 1981. Williams was tried four times for the murder, and eventually found not guilty after pleading self–defence, claiming that Hansford tried to shoot him.
